Greetings. In summary, let us explore what God means when he sends Peter to tell us that we are a royal priesthood!
What Is A Royal Priesthood? |
Let us first see that from the beginning God had in His mind the type of people that he desired. God's original plan and intention for humankind are seen in Genesis 1:26: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." God's intention was to have a people who:
1. Were like Him, had His image and likeness.
2. Had dominion on the earth
Even made it even very clear to Moses that if his people would obey Him they would be: "And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation." (Exodus 19:6).
David discovered that God's people were given so much dominion on the earth: "The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord's: but the earth hath he has given to the children of men" (Psalm 115:16). He was so astounded by God's doing that he asked God, " What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. (Psalm 8:4-8).
The original Hebrew says God has made man be a little lower than Elohim, a deputy god, a small god! God has always wanted us to have a relationship with him but at the same time know that we have dominion on the earth. David himself carried the priestly, prophetic, and kingly anointings... and though he erred a lot, God called him, "the man after my heart!"
Jesus Christ himself was the son of God and he exhibited both a close relationship with the father and strong authority to have dominion on the earth: while he preached, taught, worshipped, and honored God, He also spoke to the earth's elements, shook the political world, shifted economies, harvested money from fish and even took over all the 7 mountains of influence! He was a priest and yet King of the Jews ( and the whole world).
Through Christ Jesus we also are ultimately being made into both kings and priests: "And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen." (Revelation 1:6).
In short, a royal priesthood is people who are both kings and priests: they take territories in the physical(and spiritual) moving with God's might and authority and yet serve the Lord by having a close relationship with Him and pushing his mandate for souls to be saved!
