Can A Christian be Under Demonic Influence?

No matter how long an eagle stays with chickens, it will never become a hen. Birds and animals are not transformed into another species they are born into their family.

A Christian is a person who receives Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Saviour in their heart and commits to a life of following Christ being led by His Holy Spirit. Just going to church, following Christian rituals, reading the Bible or acting like a Christian does not make one a Christian. You become a Christian by being born of the Spirit of God not just being born of Christian parents.
If you are not sure about your status here, pray with me right now: “Lord Jesus, thank you for loving me. Forgive me of all my sins and make me a new creature. Help me by your Spirit to follow you all the days of my life. I believe you are my Lord and Saviour. Amen.”

That prayer said from a sincere heart makes you a born-again child of God, a Christian. From now go to a Bible-believing church, get baptised and attend all church programmes passionately.

When one is born again, their spirit is made regenerate. Right then, they are ready to be received into God’s holy habitation. However, that person still has to deal with a few things. The fact that the person is not just spirit is central. A person is a spirit that lives in a body and has a soul: “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23). The spirit is the human component that relates to the spiritual world, while the body relates to the outside world and the soul relates to the same human being.

The spirit is hundred percent saved but the body and the soul are not saved. If you are sick you may still continue being sick if you do not get healing or medication, for instance. The soul, mind, emotions, volition, may also not forget the pornographic material you used to watch. The body will need healing while the soul will need renewal: “Is any sick among you?

Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: “And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (James 5:14-15).

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” Romans 12:2.

These two areas of the human being if not dealt with to align to the Word and will of God may cause many open doors for demons to get hold of Christian believers.

Yet when these areas are fully possessed by God’s Spirit then no demonic spirit can influence a believer, when even your body aligns to God: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

In other words, a Christian who is wholly given to God and walks according to His statutes, with all demonic doors closed (we will learn more on this in a later chapter), cannot be possessed or oppressed by demons.
However, even when you are a great son or daughter of God, demons can fight against you: “Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us” (1 Thessalonians 2:18). The apostle Paul was resisted by Satan. That is why we also need spiritual warfare.

The moment that the Christian wilfully opens demonic doors they can be oppressed, even whilst speaking in tongues. A sinner has, absolutely no defence against both possession and oppression: “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8). Thank God that God sent Jesus Christ to die on the cross that we may be fully delivered and has also sent his servants to take you through the process and help you: “And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord because of the Midianites, That the Lord sent a prophet unto the children of Israel” (Judges 6:7).
